RFID chip not detected...
Will your food contain RFID chips?
Do you think that things will think?
RFID chip not detected... Step closer RFID chips, in other words Radio Frequency IDentification chips, are very important when it comes to Ambient Intelligence. An RFID chip is nothing more than a very small chip which broadcasts radio signals. In the near future it will probably be possible to shop for groceries without a queue in front of the cash register: there will be a small gate and when you are passing through the gate, the only thing you have to do is to pay: you don't have to move all your groceries from the shopping trolley to the cashier and back again. This is possible because of RFID chips in the food wrappings. The RFID chips send their signals to the gate, which registers these signals and with those signals it knows what groceries are in the trolley and how much the customer has to pay. RFID chips will not only be in food wrappings but also in clothes. From that point on it is possible that computers will recognize people. Because the range of the radio signal of an RFID chip is not unlimited, it might occur that someone has to step closer to the 'reader' to be recognized.
The use of RFID chips is not limited to the food wrappings and clothes: it is even possible to put RFID chips in food. Don't worry: an RFID chip is very small; it is about the size of a sugar grain so you will not notice it when eating your food. At this moment a company is working on a system that supervises what happens when medicines are taken, which is done with help of the RFID chips. A very interesting development!? Will your food contain RFID chips?
I hate it when my mirror has a blue screen Everyone is familiar with the 'blue screen of death' which will always pop up when you were just working on something important or when you had just forgotten to save the newly written paper... With the new possibilities of Ambient Intelligence the computer will take up a larger part of the environment but the people living in this environment will not really notice the computers. An example is a mirror with a television or a computer in it: this way it is possible to watch the early news while shaving. When the software of the 'mirror' doesn't work well enough there is a risk of a 'blue screen of death', which is very annoying when you are only half way done with shaving yourself...
Unfortunately, Ambient Intelligence also has disadvantages: a very important issue with regard to the introduction of Ambient Intelligence is the privacy. What kind of information is stored about a person? Which groceries he or she has bought the last ten months? Or is it possible to store the exact location of everybody at every moment of the day? How long will this information be stored and can it be used against you? These are several important aspects which must be adressed in the discussions about Ambient Intelligence. Saving Ryans privacy
Do you think that things will think? The environment will become smarter and smarter but is the environment really able to think? How does the living room know when you enter the room and you want to listen to a specific radio station? Can or will it happen that the radio plays a wrong radio station for you? How capable will the machines be of thinking for themselves and how can they adapt themselves to the changes in the environment? Is it very dynamic or is the largest part simply 'hard coded'?
